Kolkatta Police: safety tips by police for foreign: कोलकाता पुलिस बनेगी 'टूरिस्ट फ्रेंडली', देगी विदेशी पर्यटकों को सेफ्टी टिप्स.

KOLKATA: Alarmed by recent incidents of molestation and assault on foreign tourists in the city and other parts of the country, Kolkata police commissioner Surajit Kar Purakayastha has alerted every police station to be extra-vigilant at tourist spots and places where foreigners stay. Asking the police force to be 'tourist-friendly', Kolkata police has also issued security tips for foreign tourists. "Safety of foreign tourists is our major concern. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee wants the state to be 'tourist-friendly'. We, in fact, have a plan to introduce tourism police to guide and protect tourists," said tourism minister Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury. The city police has clearly pronounced that it want the visit of each foreign tourists to this exciting city to be pleasant and safe. On an average, 15 lakh foreign tourists come to Kolkata and rest of the state every year. On the other hand, the state attracts 2.2 crore domestic tourists. On the other hand Mahrashtra and Tamil Nadu attracts almost the double fioreign tourists. According to tourism department officials, better promotion and over all perception of safety and security make all the difference. The city police were particularly alarmed by the molestation of French tourists and an alleged rape of an Irish tourist recently. The city police assured that there are adequate number police personnel are deployed across the city. After landing at city railway stations or the airport, foreigners should take prepaid taxis only. In this system a tourist pays in advance for Taxi Fare which is already approved by the government for each destination in Kolkata. According to the advisory, adequate policemen are deputed outside the arrival hall and parking area. "You can contact the nearest police officer to intimate about undesirable elements," it says. However, police is taking utmost care, vigilance and surveillance over these elements. Still it is felt that we can eliminate these elements effectively with passengers' active participation in the drive," the advisory says.Police officers in plainclothes are deputed to keep watch on suspicious people. "You should never entertain touts and unscrupulous persons to avoid harassment. "Be wary of unexpected visitors at your hotel room. Never open the door to unsolicited room service. Contact the front desk if you have any doubts", the advisory adds. It also says, "If you schedule a meeting with a potential client, research the company and the individual with whom you are meeting. Meet at a public place such as restaurant. Make sure your luggage is given to a hotel staff and a receipt is issued for stored luggage. Never leave luggage or other expensive items unattended at the airport or taxi stands. Pre-plan your sightseeing destinations in Kolkata. Never take advice from unknown persons. If any tourist faces any kind of harassmentor law and order problem in Kolkata, he or she can dial 100 or 1090 for help". courtsy- TOI.
