The issue of nominating the DGP had been pending with the government since the last two years. There were several prosecutors in the race for the post. The decision to appoint Pawar was finally considered by the department on August 30. Pawar holds a degree in commerce and has done masters in law. She started practicing at civil and criminal law in 1987. She was appointed as APP in 2000. Pawar has secured conviction in a number of sensational murder cases like, Dr Deepak Mahajan, hotelier Chandrakant Khaire, call centre employee Vidya Ghorpade and her son. She has been appointed as a special public prosecutor to conduct trial in organised crime cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. She is also representing MSEDCL as a special prosecutor at Ichalkaranji. Pawar secured 17 convictions in 2011. Her appointment as the DGP is for three years.
