Mumbai Police : Dey murder: Now, a special squad to keep tabs on the underworld

After the recent murder of veteran crime journalist J Dey by what is suspected to be the handwork of the underworld, the Western Region of the police department has formed a special squad to investigate the case.

However, this squad is not likely to ne disbanded on completion of the case. It will play a role in keeping a tab on underworld activities in the western suburbs.

In the face of growing fears that the underworld is gaining in strength, Vishwas Nangaare Patil, the Additional Commissioner of Police of the Western Region, ordered that the squad continue functioning, even after the J Dey case is solved. Patil has, however, changed a few members from the original squad.

According to Patil, the squad will also look into the underworld's nexus with businessmen. The squad consists of young officers and will directly report to Patil.

Patil said of the squad, "This squad will be working on details provided by the intelligence (bureau) and will also use their own network of informers."

He further added, "The squad contains young and hard-working officers."

According to sources, forming such a squad is a first step towards bringing police personnel with strong sources into a squad that will deal with gangsters.

Crack team

>The squad consists of young police personnel, and will directly report to Patil. It includes two police officers, two police sub-inspectors and two policemen who are computer experts and analysts, apart from 20 police constables.

>The squad will keep tabs on the underworld's activities, and especially look at the underworld's nexus with businessmen.
