Mumbai Police : Man kills wife, surrenders before police

Mumbai, Jun 19 (PTI) A 46-year-old man, who claimed to be an assistant director for a few small budget films, today allegedly killed his wife in suburban Charkop area, suspecting her of having an extra-marital affair, police said. Sangamitra Suryavanshi slit the throat of his wife Preeti (39), who worked as a manager in a private firm, at their rented residence in Jeevanjyot Society at Charkop sector 5, police said, adding that multiple injuries were also found the victim's body.

"Suryavanshi, who claimed to have worked as an assistant director for some small budget movies, surrendered before the police after murdering his wife," said Uttam Sawant, Inspector at Charkop Police Station. According to police, at around 1 am, the couple had a heated argument and Suryavanshi suspected that his wife was having an extra marital affair. Following the argument, Preeti approached the Charkop police station, complaining that her husband was harrassing her. A Non Cognisable offence was lodged against Suryavanshi, after which, he was detained till 6.30 am in the police station, Inspector Sawant said. "Later, he was allowed to go, as he said he had some work. However, the furious man stabbed his wife with a knife after reaching home," Sawant added. Their two sons -- one aged 14 and the other 12-- had left home at 5.30 am, to attend a Navy programme and were not at home at the time of the incident. "After the crime, the accused later came to the police station and surrendered before them," Sawant said. The body was sent to a civic-run hospital for post mortem, he said adding that a further probe was on.
