Guj Police : Police protection to 2,509 people cost 1.95 cr: Govt

AHMEDABAD: The state government has spent Rs 1.95 crore on providing police protection to 2,509 people in the state, including 42 people in city in the past two-and-a-half year.
In a reply to Congress MLA Raghavji Patel, the government said that of the 2,509 people given police protection in the state, 129 people were provided protection at the cost borne by the state government. However, the remaining 2,380 paid for the protection provided to them.
The government said that police protection was provided at the government's cost to 42 people in Ahmedabad, which is the highest in the state. The government also bore the expense to provide protection to 25 people in Surendranagar, 23 in Rajkot rural, 15 in Banaskantha, eight in Surat city and seven in Gandhinagar.
Interestingly, all the protection expenses in Ahmedabad city were borne by the government. Officials said that in Ahmedabad, most of the people provided with police protection consisted of riots victims and witnesses who were given protection following orders from the various courts. However, in Ahmedabad rural, 11 people have paid for the police protection.
Among people who availed police protection at their cost, the highest was in Junagadh where 430 people opted for it. In Jamnagar, 388 people availed police protection in a similar manner. Also in Kheda, Bharuch, Porbandar, Mehsana, Rajkot and Bhavnagar many people paid for the police protection.
The government said that a total of 767 people were provided police protection in 2007-08, while the number was 876 in 2008-09 and 866 in 2009-10.
